BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer program developed by Bram Cohen and BitTorrent used for uploading and downloading files via the BitTorrent protocol. BitTorrent was the first client written for the protocol.
It is often nicknamed Mainline by developers denoting its official origins. Since version 6.0 the BitTorrent client has been a rebranded version of µTorrent. As a result it is no longer open source and is currently only available for Windows and Mac OS X 10.5.x.
The company offers popular free consumer software such as µTorrent and the original BitTorrent Mainline client. The clients use the BitTorrent protocol, which makes it easier for people to get large popular files online. Files are distributed in small pieces from peer-to-peer without the need for big data centers.
Files are downloaded from many different origins in pieces and are also uploaded in pieces at the same time to other consumers. This means that the more people who are downloading a file, the more who are also concurrently uploading it to others, so availability increases as demand increases
